Old-school hedge fund managers are correct in thinking that individual algorithmic traders will struggle to consistently beat the market. However, that is simply because it is hard for any investor - including old-school hedge fund managers - to beat the market.
The real value of algorithmic trading is:
(1) providing similar services to hedge funds with less overhead, and
(2) reducing the risk of human error in trading execution.
